The Truth About Gold Filled Wire

Written By: Gary on December 15, 2009 2 Comments

Gold-filled wire, which if often called rolled gold, is a great choice for wire jewelry artists. It works very well for all types of jewelry. For most users, it will last a lifetime without showing signs of wear. Gold-filled wire is made by creating a tube of gold and then the tube is filled with a base metal such as jeweler’s brass.
The designation for gold-filled wire is shown as two numbers such as 14/20. The first number represents the karat of gold used. 10, 12 or 14 karat gold is used for gold-filled wire, with the 14 karat gold being the best quality. The second number represents the gold content, which is 5% or 1/20 of the total wire.
The use of 14/20 gold-filled wire creates high end jewelry at a fraction of the cost for a solid gold counterpart. When comparing 14 karat gold-filled wire to gold plated wire, the gold-filled wire has 100 times more gold content the plated wire. Gold-filled wire is available in traditional yellow gold, white gold and rose gold.
Gold-filled wire for jewelry offers an affordable, durable and elegant choice at a fraction of the cost of solid karat gold. Gold-filled jewelry is considered a lifetime piece of jewelry. Bad Frog’s 2 Dezine Art studios use 14/20 gold-filled wire exclusively.
