There are some people who have a less tolerance to certain metals and I have often heard they are allergic to said metals. There is no question metals can cause problems for some people. However, I believe many people are having problems not due to any allergic reaction, but rather to poor craftsmanship of some jewelers.

I have seen a greater number of people who claim they are allergic to metals but only so with their ear lobes. Case in point is a lady who wanted to purchase some new earrings, but told me about her allergy to most metals. She explained her favorite pair of earrings made of sterling silver always made her ears sore for a couple of days after she wore them. She wanted to have another pair of earrings made like her favorite ones, but using a metal other than sterling. An interesting fact is she had no problem wearing sterling silver necklaces and rings.

I was struggling with the fact that only earrings created the “allergic” reaction.

As an experiment to see if she would react to Argentium silver, my preferred silver, I sent her home wearing a pair of our Argentium earrings. I told her to wear them for a couple of days to see how she faired with the different silver. She left her favorite ones with me.

Three days later, she called to say her ears were just fine and loved the Argentium silver, and of course, wanted to have Rena make a new pair similar to her favorite ones. I told her Rena would be very happy to make another pair of earrings, but first could she stop by for another test.

This time I had her wear her “favorite” earrings and to let me know how her ears felt the following day. Long story short, her ears had no problems with her “favorite” earrings.

So what was the problem with the lady’s “favorite” earrings? Unfinished ear wires. Yes, it was as simple as smoothing and rounding her ear wires.

The person who created the earrings had used a flush cutter to cut the end of the ear wire. It looked nice, but under a magnifier, I could see the edges of the ear wire were very sharp. When the lady would put the earrings on, the sharp edges of the ear wire cut or scraped her ear lobes and made them sore and irritated. She did not have any allergy to sterling silver!

Finishing of all jewelry is very important, but the finishing of ear wire is critical to the wearer. And it is so easy to accomplish.

Carefully round all edges of the ear wire with a fine file or a cup burr. Then inspect for any possible problems by feeling the wire end and checking it with a 10X loupe. It should be smooth and easy to insert into one’s ear.

And yes, I did lose a possible sale, but the lady has since sent many of her friends to buy our jewelry because I was honest and helpful.

What’s in a name?

When we started our Web TV show, we named it 2 Dezine Art TV. Our thoughts were to be able to include all forms of art in our exploration. Our first Web TV show really does focus mainly on jewelry making. I have often stumbled over the web address, but was too close to really see what was happening.

I had a talk with a wonderful marketing guru and he asked why the name was not more about what the show was about. An example of one of those “duh” moments. So with Andrews input, we have change the name of our website to more precisely focus on the purpose of the web show.

Our website is now www.JewelryMakingTV.com

Marketing is such an important part of any business and any information about how to increase your marketing ability is always needed. I want to recommend a marketing website for small businesses that can provide a great deal of good information.

Andrew Lock is a great marketing resource and can be found at www.helpmybusiness.com. He has a weekly marketing web TV show, sign up for his information and enjoy his show…

I know there are some people who really enjoy doing jewelry shows. They enjoy the interaction with people at the shows, the preparation for a show, the setup, doing the show, the takedown and the travel time. It has been expressed to me; however, about the worry of how well the show will do financially.

I think sometimes we craftspeople do not take into consideration how much time we take for shows when we look at our bottom line. Obviously we want to at least break even on how much we spend out of pocket, but I think we are sometimes kidding ourselves when we don’t take into account our time.

I was talking with another jeweler at a recent show. Understand, I am one of those people who is not afraid to ask questions about how someone’s business is doing. She and her friend, who is her business partner, were very happy with the results of the show. They had covered the cost of their booth and other out of pocket expenses. They had also made $1200 dollars. She then went on to tell me how she and her partner had spent four full days preparing for the show and then spent three days at the show. Her jaw dropped when I advised her as to how much she and her partner had made an hour for the show.

Show hours… 20 hours X2 …………………………… 40
Show preparation 32 hours X2 ………………….…… 64

$1200 divided by 104 hours ……………………………$11.54 per hour.

But wait, I have not even calculated the time to produce each sold piece of jewelry! They estimated about 38 hours labor to create the items they sold. The additional time brought their hourly pay down to $8.45. Then there is the cost of the materials needed, which we did not go into as they had had enough of a reality-check for one day.

Oh one last thing before we leave the two ladies, they proudly told me how they had decided they needed to pay themselves $50 per hour to go into this business venture.

Reality-checks are so important for business people. Reality-checks help to keep us very humble and centered.

How often do you perform and good reality-check?

Do you exhibit at jewelry shows? If you do, I am sure you have many stories about show promoters, both good and bad. I think, though, more often than not the stories are usually about problems we have experienced with promoters.
One indoor show we inquired about attending advertised their booths as costing $500. Then we were informed we could only use their tables, which was an additional $200. Oh, then there was a charge for the table covers, carpet and electricity. By the time it all added up, they had almost doubled their price. Basically I felt as a vendor they did not care about me, rather how much money they could make. We bypassed the show. Big surprise right?

Being a vendor we are basically the promoters customers. Treat your customers well and you keep them for many years. Any good businessperson knows that simple fact. Show me your only concern is how much money you can make and my loyalty as a customer is lost.

Where am I going with all of this you might ask? We did a show with a new promotional company called MalicJewels at the Reno/Sparks Convention and Visitors Authority. The Monday before the show I was getting a little nervous about the promotion of the show, so I called MalicJewels office and asked about the advertising for the up coming show. The person I talked with was one of the owners and she happily gave me the complete list of each place they were placing advertising for the show. Being the skeptic I am, I called all of the radio stations and the local newspaper to see if what I had been told was true. Not only did I find it to be true, but, each place I called commented on how easy MalicJewels were to work with and they paid promptly. Ok, good indicator!

When we arrived at the show for setup, we were warmly greeted and quickly taken to our designated booth. To our surprise we were given a larger booth than we had sign up for at no extra costs. The one quoted fee included the booth, tables, coverings and skirts, light stands and electricity. In other words, there were no surprises.

One of the owners, Debbie, was on the floor at all times, and anything we needed she was there to help. MalicJewels bent over backwards to treat us well and make us feel welcome and important. The experience with Debbie and all of her staff was such a positive one that we will be doing other shows with them in the future.

MalicJewels does about 80 shows a year around the country. You might want to check them out at MalicJewels.com and see if they have a show near you that you might consider displaying your wares. You will enjoy your experience with them.

What is in a name? As Shakespeare would say, a rose by any other name would smell just as sweet. Does that mean a name is not really important? I think thou jest with me!

Of course I am referring to a business name and I have a story to tell about how one jeweler struggled with a name.

The town of Virginia City, Nevada is living ghost town spawn from the silver mines discovered in the mid 1800’s. Today, downtown Virginia City looks much like it did 150 years ago. The various saloons, wooden sidewalks and six-shooter toting citizens, but I digress.

There is a goldsmith in Virginia City and when he opened his storefront, many years ago, his business signage read Virginia Goldsmith. Makes sense, doesn’t it. The town was named after Virginia and he is a goldsmith. The problem with the name showed up when people would start to come in and ask to see the woman named Virginia Goldsmith. Name change time.

The name for the store was changed to Highland Goldsmith. This made sense because Virginia City sits at over 6,0000 feet in elevation and of course, he was as goldsmith. This name also proved to be a problem when people would come in and say, “Oh, I thought this was another saloon.” Seems most people had no idea what goldsmith referred to in the name. There is a saloon called the Silver Queen!!

The name was changed again, but this time the name came from a television show via a good friend. Do you remember Bonanza, the show with Ben, Hoss, Little Joe and Adam Cartwright? The show was filmed at Lake Tahoe, Nevada some sixty miles from Virginia City. The movie set had become a tourist attraction, but later closed and the artifacts from the show were auctioned. The good friend purchased a sign from the original show which simply said “Jeweler”.

The signage and now name of the goldsmith shop is “Jeweler”. There seems to be no question about what goes on in the establishment, and Dave is now known as the town’s jeweler.

Such a simple name, Jeweler, and it smells just as sweet as Goldsmith…
